You making mainframe software is a whole different beast, especially when it comes to OS upgrading, so that's not comparable with a modern DAW. Sometimes you have to make the call and cut ties with legacy systems. If keeping support for these older OS versions means having to support some legacy systems or preventing moving forward to using better/more efficient OS functionality, then that also means an increase in cost or a decrease in likely performance (as it could be better, but isn't going to be because legacy).Īs a software developer you should be well aware of this. So your "lose-lose proposition" is likely not valid, as we're probably dealing with whatever low amount of Win 7 users, who for some reason haven't upgraded. It coming in time with MS ending support as well just makes it easier. I'll have to assume that the reason they're dropping support is because it can ease development/support due to various factors.

In other words, I won't be able to upgrade S1 and Presonus won't be getting any more money from me if dropping Win 7 support continues.
Therefore, I intend to continue running Win 7 for the foreseeable future because of the significant investment in hardware and software that won't be discarded just for the sake of being able to run the next S1 release. In my case, a new computer is required to move to Win 10. Tomstorms wroteAlthough Microsoft is not supporting Win7 starting next year, it seems ill-considered for S1 to abandon Win 7 users so prematurely. I hope Presonus will reconsider their position on dropping Win 7 support. In my experience, it was beneficial to the company and the customers to continue supporting back level systems for several years beyond their expiration dates. However, as a mainframe software developer of system level utilities for over 50 years I know it is possible support OS levels and hardware long beyond their "announced" lifetime. Of course, it's much simpler to develop software for a limited set of platforms.
